Italy has always held a special place in my heart. I’ve visited it countless times (At least eight times a year, either for work or for pleasure) and even lived there for a couple of months on more than one occasion. Yet, the country never ceases to amaze me. Among my travels, Verona stands out—not just for its legendary ties to Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” but for its timeless charm, rich history, and luxurious lifestyle. As someone with ancestral roots in the Veneto region, discovering Verona became a deeply personal journey, blending my genealogical heritage with an unforgettable travel experience.

Must-Visit Attractions in Verona

Verona is a city where history and culture intertwine, offering countless treasures to explore beyond its romantic fame. Here are some must-visit sites to enhance your itinerary:

Arena di Verona

Located in Piazza Bra, this remarkably preserved Roman amphitheater is one of Verona’s most iconic landmarks. Built in the 1st century AD, the Arena continues to host world-class opera performances and concerts, drawing visitors from around the globe.

I had the opportunity to watch an opera there, and oh my, what a magical experience! If the Arena di Verona is impressive during the day, at night it transforms into something truly extraordinary. The cinematic lighting, the stars twinkling above, and the powerful music filling all your senses—it’s pure magic. I still remember the goosebumps I felt during the most emotional arias, and I couldn’t help but get teary-eyed at the intensity of the singers’ performances.

Attending an opera here is a unique, unforgettable experience, but you’ll need to book in advance to secure the best seats. Let Experience Wanderlust handle all the details for you—we’ll ensure you have the best tickets in the house for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

Piazza delle Erbe

Once a bustling Roman forum, Piazza delle Erbe is now the heart of Verona’s social life. Surrounded by historic buildings adorned with frescoes, the square features lively markets and charming cafes where you can soak up the local atmosphere. Don’t miss the ornate Madonna Verona Fountain in the center of the square.

Piazza dei Signori

Also known as “Signori Square,” this elegant plaza is a quieter counterpart to Piazza delle Erbe. Adorned with statues and surrounded by medieval and Renaissance buildings, it reflects Verona’s political and cultural history. Look out for the statue of Dante Alighieri, who once took refuge in Verona.

Castelvecchio and Ponte Scaligero

The 14th-century Castelvecchio fortress is a testament to Verona’s medieval military architecture. Today, it houses an impressive art museum featuring works from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. The adjacent Ponte Scaligero, a fortified bridge over the Adige River, is a masterpiece of engineering and offers fantastic photo opportunities.

Torre dei Lamberti

For the best panoramic views of Verona without having to hike, climb the 84-meter-tall Torre dei Lamberti. The tower stands proudly in Piazza delle Erbe, offering a bird’s-eye view of the city’s red rooftops, ancient structures, and the surrounding hills. An elevator is available for those who prefer an easier ascent.

Castel San Pietro

Perched atop a hill overlooking Verona, Castel San Pietro is a 14th-century fortress originally built as a defensive fortification. Today, it’s a beloved attraction offering the best views of the city. From its top, you’ll see the red rooftops of Verona’s historic center, the winding Adige River, and the rolling hills beyond.

This was the spot we chose for a gourmet picnic, and it did not disappoint. A wicker basket, a soft blanket, and a great bottle of Valpolicella Ripasso in hand, paired with fresh-baked bread—still warm and crunchy—a curated selection of Italian cheeses, fragrant red fruits, and delicious cold cuts. Bottle opener? Always. I’m no amateur in the art of picnicking. With the sun dipping low and the sky turning shades of orange and pink, we enjoyed the most scenic, romantic afternoon imaginable.

For the best experience, plan your visit to Castel San Pietro at sunset when the golden light bathes the city, creating the perfect backdrop for both relaxation and breathtaking photos.

Basilica di San Zeno Maggiore

This Romanesque masterpiece is dedicated to Verona’s patron saint, San Zeno. Its stunning facade, intricate bronze doors, and the Mantegna Altarpiece inside make it a must-visit for history and art enthusiasts. The basilica’s serene courtyard is an ideal spot for quiet reflection.

Giardino Giusti

Escape the city’s hustle at the Giardino Giusti, a beautifully landscaped Renaissance garden. This hidden gem features manicured hedges, statues, fountains, and a labyrinth. The garden also provides a peaceful vantage point with views over Verona’s rooftops and the Adige River. This is a great pet-friendly walk if you`re traveling with your furry companion.

Unveiling the True Juliet

No visit to Verona would be complete without a stop at Casa di Giulietta. Though Juliet’s House is more fantasy than fact, it’s a charming nod to Shakespeare’s tale. While Casa di Giulietta is one of Verona’s most visited attractions, the story behind it is more fiction than fact.

The house, built in the 13th century, originally belonged to the del Capello family—a name that closely resembles “Capulet,” inspiring its connection to Shakespeare’s tragic heroine. In the 1930s, the house was renovated, and the now-famous balcony was added as a nod to the play. Though Juliet herself never lived here—she’s a fictional character—the house has become a symbol of romance, drawing visitors eager to experience the magic of Shakespeare’s tale. While the interior lacks historical authenticity, at least that was my opinion, the courtyard—with Juliet’s statue and the famed balcony—is perfect for a quick photo op.

For a truly romantic moment, take an evening walk along the riverbanks during the blue hour. Watching the city lights reflect on the Adige River is pure magic—a reminder that Verona’s romance transcends its fictional lovers.

A Culinary Affair with Verona

Food and wine are at the heart of any Italian adventure, and Verona is no exception. The Veneto region is renowned for its gastronomic delights, from creamy Risotto all’Amarone to hearty Pastissada de Caval (a traditional horse meat stew served with polenta). While I couldn’t bring myself to try the latter—being a horse lover and having had horses my whole life—I savored every bite of my Bigoli pasta with duck and truffle oil at Osteria da Ugo, a hidden gem brimming with local character.

Pair your meal with a glass of Amarone della Valpolicella, one of Italy’s most exquisite wines and my all-time favorite. This robust red, crafted from partially dried grapes, captures the very essence of the region.

For wine enthusiasts, Verona is a gateway to the nearby Valpolicella wine region, where rolling vineyards and prestigious wineries await. A private tasting tour in Valpolicella is an indulgence not to be missed, offering an opportunity to sample Amarone and other exceptional wines right where they’re made.

If you’re dreaming of the ultimate wine-tasting experience, Experience Wanderlust can take care of every detail.
